Children Short Story – The Devil’s Stomping Ground

Once there was an 8th grader named Glenn Warfield who heard the story of the Devils stomping ground in his Social Studies class. He thought that it was stupid and that it was not true so he decided to go there and prove himself right.

He went to the store and bought a tent and a sleeping bag. Then he went over to his friend Daniels house and told him what he was up to. Daniel looked nervous and told Glenn that he couldn’t because he was taking his grandma to the hospital in an hour. So Glenn just left and headed toward the spot.

When he got there he built his tent, got into his sleeping bag, and went to sleep. About half way through the night he woke to the sound of footsteps in the distance. He thought it was just an animal and wet back to sleep, but an hour later he heard them again but this time they were closer. This time he stayed up and about 30 minutes later he heard them again and now they sounded as if they were right outside of his tent.

He was so scared and wanted to believe it was his imagination, then he thought it was his friend trying to prank him so he unzipped the sleeping bag and went outside to take a look. He looked everywhere and not a single sign of presence among him. But just as he turned around, to get back in the tent and go back to sleep, he saw these big red eyes staring at him. No body just two red eyes kind of as if they were just floating there.

Of course he freaked out and jumped into his tent. At the break of dawn he awoke, unzipped his tent, fixed his sleeping bag, and fled. But as he ran the road seemed to get farther and farther away. He ran as fast as he could but never got close to the road. So he gave up and sat down in the grass.

He heard a strange growling sound behind him and he thought that it was a wolf or coyote. He got up slowly and pulled out his knife and as he turned around there stood a horned creature. It lunged forward. Back in Mooresville, Daniel felt sorry for not coming with him to the stomping ground and he wanted to apologize so he headed to the spot. But when he got there he saw a broken tent with a few red stains on it, a ripped up sleeping bag, and a bloody knife. He looked everywhere but Glenn was gone.
